Simply Internet and a Bit More

A six-hour youth workshop will be offered where youth will learn about the following topics in an engaging and hands-on approach:

Internet architecture
Laws related to the Internet
Islamic perspective of the Internet
Islamic issues and concerns
Dangers of the Internet
Opportunities of the Internet

The workshop will cover details of the structure of the internet, its operation, data privacy, integrity and internet access and authentication. Attendees will also be exposed to security issues of various Internet devices such as mobile devices, smart phones and computers. An overview of the various laws impacting Internet usage shall be shared and its implication, as well as the Islamic perspective of information on the Internet, knowledge and learning; and the various Internet platforms such as facebook, kik, twitter, instagram, snapchat, websites, blogs and others. A discussion on information authenticity, overview of science of hadeeth, and bodies of knowledge, search engines and other information resources. Attendees will learn about the role of the Internet in human trafficking, pornography, modesty, cyber-bullying, plagiarism, consumerism, terrorism, time management, fraud, abuse, privacy concerns, gaming, career, school, family and social relations. Attendees will also get exposed to opportunities presented by the Internet such as outreach, advocacy, entrepreneurship, research, education, networking and collaboration.

The workshop will include group and individual activities, drills, games, quizzes, mock situations, videos, real case studies and possibly a visit by a law enforcement officer.

Included is a two-hr session for parents only from 1:45 pm to 3:45 pm. There is a $10 fee on-site for lunch.
